The Definition of Saju (四柱)
Saju (四柱) literally means "four pillars." It refers to the year, month, day, and hour of birth — four pieces of temporal information compared to pillars.
In East Asian BaZi, the moment of birth is seen as the initial setting of a person's qi (life force). Just as a computer loads its base program when first turned on, the celestial energy and seasonal qi at the moment of birth influence a person's nature and inclinations. This is the core premise of BaZi philosophy.

The Meaning of Palpja (八字)
Each of the four pillars consists of one heavenly stem and one earthly branch — two characters total. With four pillars, that's 2 × 4 = 8 characters, which is where the term "palpja (八字)" comes from.
Common phrases like "having good palpja" or "it's not in my palpja" originate from this concept. The eight characters contain implicit information about five elements, yin-yang, the ten gods, and more. The process of interpreting these eight characters is called Saju reading (Saju reading).

What the Four Pillars Signify
The year pillar represents your birth year and signifies ancestors and social background. The month pillar represents your birth month and symbolizes parents, siblings, and your growing environment. Critically, the earthly branch of the month pillar determines your chart's pattern.
The day pillar represents your birth day, and the day master (day stem) represents "yourself." It is also the spouse palace, which is examined first when assessing marriage fortune. The hour pillar represents your birth hour and signifies children's fortune and the fruition of your later years.
These four pillars are independent yet interconnected, forming an organic whole.

Saju is Not Determinism
Saju is often misunderstood as "predetermined fate," but traditional BaZi also views Saju as representing "tendency" rather than "fixed future."
People with identical Saju can lead completely different lives based on environment, education, and willpower. Just as the same tree seed grows differently depending on soil and weather, Saju is merely a map of innate potential. What matters is how you use that map.

Modern Applications of Saju
Today, Saju is used as a tool for self-understanding and decision-making. It can provide an opportunity for objective self-reflection when facing career dilemmas, understanding relationship patterns, or determining important timing.
