01
Year Pillar (年柱) — Ancestors and Social Environment
The year pillar, formed from the heavenly stem and earthly branch of your birth year, represents your ancestors and family qi, as well as fortune during your early years (ages 0–15). It also signifies your social and generational background, reflecting generational traits shared with others born in the same year.
A favorable year pillar indicates family virtue and a stable childhood, while an unfavorable one may suggest difficulties in early years or weak family ties. However, the year pillar is the outermost pillar in the chart, making it closer to external environment than to yourself.
02
Month Pillar (月柱) — Parents, Siblings, and Pattern Determination
The month pillar, formed from the heavenly stem and earthly branch of your birth month, governs parents, siblings, and fortune during young adulthood (ages 15–30). In BaZi, the month pillar is considered the most important, as the earthly branch of the month pillar (the month branch) is the basis for determining your chart's pattern.
The month branch carries the qi of the season, making the day master stronger or weaker depending on the season of birth. For example, if a wood day master is born in spring (months of tiger and rabbit), they meet their favorable season and their qi flourishes. If born in autumn (months of monkey and rooster), they encounter metal overcoming wood and may face difficulties.
03
Day Pillar (日柱) — Yourself and Your Spouse
The day pillar, formed from the heavenly stem and earthly branch of your birth day, governs fortune during adulthood (ages 30–45). The day master (day stem) is the character representing "yourself" throughout the entire chart and is the starting point for all Saju interpretation. Ten gods, pattern, and yongsin are all determined based on the day master.
The day branch (earthly branch) is the spouse palace, indicating your spouse's personality and the nature of your marital relationship. If the day master and day branch relate harmoniously, spousal fortune is favorable; if there is clash or overcoming, there may be potential for conflict. Each of the 60 day pillar combinations has unique character traits, making substantial personality analysis possible from the day pillar alone.
04
Hour Pillar (時柱) — Children and the Fruition of Later Life
The hour pillar, formed from the heavenly stem and earthly branch of your birth hour, governs children's fortune and fortune during later years (age 45 onward). It is crucial for determining the fruition of your later life and stability in old age.
A favorable hour pillar brings filial children and peaceful old age, while an unfavorable one may suggest loneliness in later years or weak ties with children. The hour pillar also reflects deep inner desires and the subconscious. If birth time is unknown, analysis may be done with six characters (without the hour pillar).
05
Reading the Four Pillars Holistically
Saju interpretation is not about examining one pillar in isolation but rather viewing the balance and flow of all four pillars comprehensively. We examine the combinations, clashes, penalties, and breaks between pillars, the distribution and skewing of five elements, the arrangement of ten gods, and more in three-dimensional analysis.
For example, if the year pillar and month pillar clash, significant environmental changes occur in childhood. If the day pillar and hour pillar combine, later life is stable. Reading these pillar relationships is the essence of Saju interpretation, and AI Saju reading analyzes these complex relationships quickly and accurately.
